Joseph Sachs Recommends Top Questions to Ask When Choosing a Wedding Photographer

The crucial question is this: Will the photographer capture the wedding day the way you, the bride and groom, want? Will he use creative photography to create unique and emotional memories that you will cherish the rest of your life?

  1. You will definitely want to be sure that the photographer you hire is the one who shows up at the door on your wedding day. After all, that's the person you interviewed in the first place and established a relationship with.
    Ask:
Are you the only photographer in this company?
If I hire you, am I guaranteed that you will be the one showing up to shoot my wedding?
If yes, can I get that in writing?
(You should always have an agreement in writing).
  2. Is the work that I am seeing all yours and only yours or is it a compilation of work from more than one photographer?
  3. Can you show me 3 or more complete weddings you’ve done? If not, find a more experienced photographer, or at least one who cares more for their own marketing.
  4. Decide for yourself which styles of photography you want your photographer to be capable of, then ask: What styles of photography do you offer? Traditional? Photojournalism? Or both?
  5. If you'll be wanting black and white as well as color photography, ask: Is color and B/W photography included or is there an extra fee for B/W?
  6. Is unlimited coverage included in your packages or is there an extra fee for all day coverage? Are you willing to come extra early to get shots of us (the couple) before the ceremony, if we choose to do that? Would there be a fee for this?
  7. If your packages are not what I am looking for, would you be willing to try to customize a package for me that is within my budget?
  8. If your wedding big enough ask:
Do your packages include one or two photographers and is there an extra fee for a second photographer?
  9. Do you work with an assistant? If so, is there an additional charge for the assistant?
  10. How many and what kind of cameras do you use? (Do you have backup equipment if something breaks?) Do you use film based or digital cameras or a combination of both?
  11. If your photographer is not local to you, ask:
How far will you travel to a wedding before charging a travel fee?
  12. Do you charge a fee if the wedding and reception are in more than one location? What if we want to go to a third location for pictures? Is there a charge for this?
  13. Do you offer only traditional albums or do you have a wide variety of options to choose from including any coffee table style books?

According to Sachs, "My experience has allowed for me to gain the knowledge and creative ability that makes great shots happen". Mostly taking photojournalistic shots, Sachs tries to capture the day with "beautiful and fun" shots of the bride and groom, along with formal, memorable pictures of the family. He usually meets with the clients two or three times before an event to get details and ideas settled. A few different kinds of cameras can be used for varied effects.
