high marble statue of a seated Abraham Lincoln.
- Jefferson Memorial
The Jefferson memorial is
located across the tidal basin from the western end of the Mall
and adds picturesque charm to the views from many locations. It
is a beautiful white-marble, circular-domed structure
patterned after a classic Greek temple. It contains a 19-foot tall
bronze statue of President Jefferson.
- US Capitol Building
The US Capitol
Building sits on a slight hill at the eastern end of the Mall.
It is a beautiful white building of classical Greek design with
a large central dome, columnar porticos, grand staircase and two
wings
- White House
The
official residence of the President of the United States is
located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, two blocks north of the
Mall near the Washington Monument. It is best viewed from the
Ellipse, a large open field behind the White House, or from
Lafayette Park in front of the building.
- Supreme Court
The Supreme Court Building is
located at 1st and East Capitol Sts., NE. The Supreme Court Building,
constructed between 1932--1935, was designed by noted architect Cass Gilbert.
- Washington Memorial
The Washington Monument is
the most prominent feature of the DC skyline. It is
the 555-foot high, white-marble obelisk at the top of a slight
rise in the center of the Mall. It is best viewed from the steps
of the Lincoln Memorial at the western end of the Mall where an
inverted image appears in the large reflecting pool.
- The Smithsonian Institution
The Smithsonian Institution, composed of 14 separate facilities
scattered about Washington DC, is one of the finest collections
of museums in the world. Nine of the museums are located on The
Mall between the Capitol Building and the Washington Monument.

The National Air and Space Museum is nearly everyone's favorite. It
displays many original historic aircraft and spacecraft as well
as full scale models of a Lunar Lander, a Spacelab, numerous
rockets and aircraft.
- Union Station
Union Station, completed in 1907, has been
appropriately described as a "great and impressive gateway" to the Nation's
Capital. Recently remodeled into a luxury mall and tourist stop
consisting of more than 100 stores and a huge eatery offering
dishes from pizza to sushi, it is considered to be one of the
most beautiful railroad terminals in the world.
- John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts
Beautifully situated along the Potomac River
is the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, a living
memorial to President Kennedy who took an active interest in the
performing arts.
- Arlington House, The Robert E. Lee Memorial
The glorious
view from the front of the Robert E. Lee Memorial caused
President Kennedy, in one of his visits, to exclaim, "I could
stay here forever!" And the Kennedy family who had chosen two
other burial sights in Arlington Cemetery, when told of his
remark, immediately, designated President Kennedy's final
resting place to be the base of the hill which Arlington House
sits upon.
